Green 1970 Porsche 911 T Targa in the workshop

Porsche 911 2.2 T, Part 1: A Second Chance

This is our 1970 Porsche 911 T 2.2 Targa, in the green it left the factory in.

It was first registered in Germany and was last on the road around 1990. We bought it from someone we know, who had bought it already welded and painted. Unfortunately, whoever did that work did a terrible job. The doors wouldn't even shut properly.

So this car gets a second chance, and this time it's going to be done right.

The 911 T

The T was the entry point to the 911 range, with a 2.2-litre air-cooled flat six from 1970. This one is a Targa, with the brushed stainless roll bar and removable roof panel, and it came with a set of Weber carburettors already fitted.

Putting it right

The earlier repairs had to come back out. Panels were taken back to bare metal, the metalwork was put right, and the doors and wings were reworked until they fitted the way they should.

Checking every gap

Before any paint went on, the lights, grilles and bumpers were trial-fitted, so every gap could be checked while it was still easy to change.

And this time, the doors shut.
