Description:
Wheel bearings are the central roller bearings on vehicles that guide the wheel over the wheel hub in the wheel carrier. In older vehicles, these are often pairs of bearings made of, for example, deep groove ball bearings and needle bearings; newer models generally have double-row angular contact ball bearings. In the past, open roller bearings with separate shaft seals were also used. These have now been replaced by lifetime-lubricated bearings thanks to "functional integration". If a wheel bearing is defective, this is usually noticeable by a "rumbling" noise when cornering. A vigorous shaking of the wheel can also provide information about the condition of the wheel bearings.
