Components in the valve train are subject to high loads at varying temperatures. Controlled by the camshaft, actuation occurs via the rocker arms on the valves.
Clacking / nailing noises, especially when the engine is cold, are signs of worn components in the valve train or incorrectly adjusted valve clearance.
During engine overhaul or maintenance, worn or damaged components must be replaced immediately to avoid consequential damage.
