The thermostat controls the cooling circuit of the engine oil and thus doses the cooling of the air-cooled engine. This ensures a short cold run while the engine is fully cooled under load, as the oil is fed through the oil cooler or cooling coil.
If the thermostat is defective or hangs, the engine will run with only one of the two oil circuits. Unnecessarily long warm-up phases or overheating of the engine (oil burns) are the result.
It is therefore important to replace a hanging thermostat early so that the engine oil temperature control can function properly again.
The thermostat housing is also called the regulator housing in Porsche circles.
