The joints on tie rods are subject to wear, which usually starts with a cracked boot. Once the grease is washed out of the axial joint or tie rod end, the ball joint will fail within a few 1000 kilometers. At the latest, the defective rubber sleeves or rod ends are objected to at the TÜV. Depending on the Porsche model, the tie rods can consist of two or three main components. These include the axial joint as the inner ball joint in front of the steering gear and the so-called tie rod end at the outer end of the tie rod. Sometimes the axial joint and tie rod end are still connected via a separate intermediate tube. Because the change of the tie rod always requires a new chassis measurement with adjustment of the toe-in, it is recommended depending on the condition to replace the tie rod completely.
