The crankshaft sensors measure the crankshaft speed and sit well hidden accessible from above on the flywheel. The pulse encoder transmits the engine speed to the DME and is a common source of error when the engine is not running smoothly. The reliable and precise function of the pulse generator is particularly important for the engine electronics.

The 924S as well as 944 has two of these Impuslgeber installed. In the 928 and 968 only one pulse encoder of this type and one dead center mark encoder is installed.
