The thermostat controls the large and small cooling circuit and thus doses the cooling of the water-cooled engine. This ensures a short cold run while the engine is fully cooled under load.
If the thermostat is defective or hangs, the engine runs with only one of the two cooling circuits. Unnecessarily long warm-up phases or overheating of the engine are the result.
It is therefore important to replace a hanging thermostat at an early stage so that the temperature control of the cooling water can function properly again.
