The joints on tie rods are subject to wear, which usually starts with a cracked boot. Once the grease is washed out of the axial joint or tie rod end, the ball joint fails within a few 1000 kilometers. At the latest, the defective rubber sleeves or rod ends are objected to at the TÜV. Depending on the Porsche model, the tie rods can consist of two or three main components. These include the axial joint as the inner ball joint in front of the steering gear and the so-called tie rod end at the outer end of the tie rod. Sometimes the axial joint and tie rod end are also directly connected, as in the 924/944 and 968. Because changing the tie rod always requires a new chassis measurement with adjustment of the toe-in, it is also advisable to replace the tie rod completely, depending on its condition. At the 924/944 the tie rods differ in length AND if internal/external thread at the head. So in case of doubt you can also check your thread type and visually compare. Another difference: With the model year 1987 the 944 got the so called "wide axle". The tie rod ends of the cars with power steering and/or wide axle always have an external thread and are screwed onto the rods.
